Announcement: THEME 2

October 20, 2008

The response to last week’s first photo contest was so good I’ve got another one for you!  My previous post about just how important music is in my life was a little teaser. I wanted to create a theme that everyone could relate to and be excited enough to get out there and shoot!

Ok I won’t bore you with the details.  Theme 2 is……………….SONG TITLES

To make it extra challenging I’ve listed 10 song titles you have to pick from (you can enter multiple times, but no one photographer can use a title more than once):

1. I Will Remember You (artist: Sarah McLachlan)

2. Last Kiss (artist: Pearl Jam)

3. Narrow Daylight (artist: Diana Krall)

4. Stop and Stare (artist: One Republic)

5. Material Girl (artist: Madonna)

6. Toxic (artist: Britney Spears)

7. Stupid Girls (artist: P!nk)

8. All You Need Is Love (artist: The Beatles)

9. Forever Young (artist: Rod Stewart)

10. Human Touch (artist: Bruce Springsteen)

DEADLINE FOR ENTRIES IS THURSDAY AT MIDNIGHT!

Send all entries to focus@lori-moss.com {please resize to about 700 pixels wide before sending :) } Please note: there’s no time constraint on this challenge! You can enter any photo you feel fits a song as long as you took it.

Jason & Dawn

October 18, 2008

I’ve come to realize that it’s just not a Newfoundland wedding without wind, drizzle, and fog! Luckily, everyone is pretty used to it and the show goes on :)

I’m told that Jason and Dawn have been a couple for a while now (hmm 12 years maybe?) and that Jason’s son and basically everyone they know has been ticking down the seconds until they *finally* got married (I swear that’s their words not mine lol).  I gotta say, the reception speeches were the funniest I’ve ever heard, so there are TONS of ‘big laugh’ shots to put in the album!

Jason and Dawn, thank you so much for letting me be apart of what was one of my favorite weddings! I had a great time from start to finish.

P.S. I have at least one more post planned for this wedding so check back tomorrow…

And the winner is…

October 18, 2008

Joanne Palmer with her ‘Shoes’ entry!  Congratulations Jo :)

I personally liked her entry for the simplicity and low key lighting.  What’s more impressive, is that I know Joanne and that her camera is more than crappy (sorry) and somehow the highlights aren’t blown out and the shadows aren’t too black. Her reward? Dinner with me; she’s buying (j/k)  I’ll be in touch.

Theme 1 was a huge hit and I’m hoping for even more entries when I announce Theme 2 on Monday. Stay tuned…until then have a great weekend!

Music makes me lose my mind

October 17, 2008

Keep the votes coming!  I love how everyone is getting involved…I think Theme 1 is a hit :)

So in preparation for Theme 2, which I haven’t unveiled yet, I wanted to write a bit about who I am and what I like in this world besides photography.  My favorite things may not be photographic in nature, but they all inspire my work in some way. Some more obviously than others.

For starters, my first love has always been music.  Every kind of music.  Today, for instance, I busted out a little Nirvana while gutting out the hall closets.  Nevermind is one of my all time favorite albums and if you were in junior high in the mid-90′s it’s probably yours too.  On the total other end of the musical spectrum, yesterday I also had a nice bubble bath with Nessum Dorma…gives me shivers.  Some of my other playlists in heavy rotation include: Jeff Buckley, The Boss, Tegan & Sarah, GnR, The Clash, and seeing how it’s nearly Christmas, I should warn you I’m a massive Boney M fan! I even love their cheesy videos…if you aren’t a seriously demented fan; you should be.

When I was little, I mean really little, my parents had a record player that they never played and records that they never listened to.  But I did.  I can clearly remember sitting on the floor huddled over Tears For Fears and thinking how incredible it all was.  A big wooden box that played big black plates? Awesome!

Something else I love about music, is live concert photography (the photo is mine) and old retro album covers.  This shot is still considered the highest standard to which all other band photos are judged against; do you agree with the adoration? I do. And the best part is, Pennie Smith (the photographer) didn’t even want the guys to use the shot because it’s not technically perfect.  Us photographers are such nerds sometimes!

What’s this got to do with the next contest you ask? If it’s not obvious enough, you’ll just have to wait until Monday!  Oooooh what’s it gonna be…hmmm

Tomorrow I’m heading out of town for my last wedding until Christmas, so I’ll be catching up on some editing and brewing up interesting tidbits to woo you well into the new year!

October 16, 2008

Thank you to everyone who not only took the time to read my blog, but to participate…you guys rock!  Putting your photos on display is a scary thing sometimes, but it’s such a great opportunity to learn from our peers and for real artistic growth.

To vote: click ‘comments’ at the bottom of this post, fill in the required fields (standard stuff), and type in the number of your fave photo.  Feedback is always appreciated so feel free to leave a message, too!

VOTING IS NOW  CLOSED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

12 hours to deadline!

October 15, 2008

Time is a tickin’!  Everyone has 12 hours left to get in entries to the first Super Amazing Photo Contest (“The one thing you can’t live without”).

While you guys are working away, I’ve been watching podcasts, reading blogs, and just generally dwindling away the morning.  BUT the benefit to you is I’ve come across this hilarious video of Denis Reggie (the wedding photography pioneer) that, at first, I thought was really strange but the ending is just too funny. Enjoy!

Thanksgiving! A day late…

October 15, 2008

I know, I’m so behind the times.  Better late than never! Note: instead of ‘late’ I initially wrote ‘ate’.  Freudian slip?

Sunday I was invited to dinner at my sorta-Aunt-Eldene’s although she’s not really my aunt (she’s actually Charla’s aunt, though Charla wasn’t there…) but I grew up calling her ‘aunt’. You know what I mean.  Anyway, we tucked into some delicious turkey and veg, while Evan (he is my actual cousin) tried in vain to avoid my lens.  I told him if he just cooperated it would all be over quickly, but nooooo, he was coy so I had to follow him relentlessly until I got a few I was satisfied with.

P.S. that’s Lee in the kitchen slaving over a hot stove

proof I was actually there…see, this is what happens when I try to be IN a shot….sigh…..

Super Amazing Encouragement!

October 14, 2008

I hope everyone is busy shooting their entry for my first ever photo/blog contest!  I want to personally encourage everyone and their dog (if he/she can hold a camera) to be uninhibited and just shoot.  By that I mean, are you thinking of entering but are holding back? Psychologically I mean.  If you’re being physically restrained at this moment, I have a feeling this contest is not your biggest problem. I digress.

I know what it’s like to just stare at your camera and think “this camera sucks, everything I do sucks, no one wants to see anything I do; I suck”.   The fear that’s holding you back from taking that photo and sharing it with the world (or at least my blog readers) is probably holding you back in other areas of your life, too.  Does it hold you back from going to school? From traveling? From speaking your mind? From joining a gym? If you’re like me, at any given time, I’m holding myself back from doing a dozen cool things.   I’ve learned to let go and start small; one accomplishment at a time.

Everyone has to take a first step!  Pick up that camera, get the shot, and feel proud.  Accomplish one thing today. Tomorrow, start fresh :)

Happy shooting,

Lori

Super Amazing Theme 1

October 13, 2008

*drum roll please* The very first theme for my very first Super Amazing Photo Contest is:

“The one thing you can’t live without”

Now, I’m being extremely generous with this theme!  It encompasses a wide variety of topics and basically anything and everyone.  So get snapping!   Here are some guidelines:

* email submissions by Wednesday at midnight (Newfoundland time) to focus@lori-moss.com

* please resize your submission when emailing and include your name

* feel free to post-process to your heart’s content (hint: less is more)

* you must have taken the photo within the next 48 hours!

* get your friends and family ready to vote! vote! vote!

* it’s just for fun so have a good time

* respect the privacy of others: not everyone wants their photo on a public blog (I am not responsible for images being posted without prior consent)

Happy shooting my fellow shutterbugs :)
